Coach: Yonah Duniam

Give us a little background on who you are and where you're from?

My name is Yonah, I grew up In a small country town on the north-west coast of Tasmania. Have lived on the Gold Coast now for the last 7 years. love it up here, love the lifestyle, weather, beaches and have met so many great people up here too.

How long have you been a coach for and what got you into the health & fitness industry?

Around 8 years now. I was always really passionate about health and fitness from a young age doing almost every sport. I studied exercise science and became an exercise physiologist. I have always really loved helping people grow and do things they didn't think were possible. I've also never wanted a typical job so initially I became an exercise physiologist and personal trainer and it all started from there.

What did you do before you were a Coach?

I've worked in a restaurant, a call centre, as a boundary umpire and at a waterslide all for short periods. When I got into coaching I thoroughly enjoyed it and could see a real vision for myself there so I never looked back.

If you could only do one exercise for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?

That is a tough question. I think for me it would probably be surfing as its so much fun. It requires great mobility, speed and power and also gives you an awesome aerobic workout. You don't realise how hard your working because you're having so much fun!

What was the latest thing you've learnt in your area of expertise? Or currently, learning?

Holistic health has been an interest of mine for a while now and really understanding the root cause of peoples problems to be able to help them create real change, tied into that is the psychology of change and helping people change their beliefs and thinking, no quick fixes here, we focus on long-lasting change.

When you're not at the gym/with clients/working - what do you like to do to relax and unwind?

Surfing, getting out in nature, eating great food, socialising with friends, reading books.

Who is someone you really admire in the health and fitness industry and why?

Mark Buckley. He was an awesome mentor to me for a few years. He's very knowledgeable and has a lot of experience within musculoskeletal rehab and holistic health and I am definitely able to help people on a whole new level after being taught by him.

What's your favourite quote? fitness-related or not.

Everything in your life is a reflection of a choice you have made. If you want a different result, make a different choice.

Favourite book/YouTube/Netflix/article you like to recommend to people? Related to health and fitness.

"why leaders eat last" - Simon Sinek. I wouldn't say its direct health and fitness related. But it has some awesome information that allows people to understand creating balance in their lives which is a big part of living a healthy life. I have recommended the YouTube clip to countless people!

Who is your typical client and how do you benefit their life?

Professionals who are busy and have let life take over, they forgot about their health. They may have some aches and pains, are overweight, not sleeping the best etc. I help them become pain-free, full of energy and a picture of health.

What do you see most people struggle with when it comes to their health and fitness?

Creating real lasting change. I see a lot of people try and fall short or give up because it's too hard. It can be challenging to navigate the journey to your optimum health when life is hectic and also your life is set up to support them being the version themselves that they are right now, not the healthy version of themselves that they want to become.

What's the best piece of advice to help with this?

The fasted way to get from where you are to where you want to be is to get a coach who is at your goal, someone who knows the way, someone who knows the problems that will come up and can help you avoid them and quickly troubleshoot anything that does come up and try to derail you.
